While not widely known in the U.S., he was regarded as one of the most promising European luthiers of his time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAccording to\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOtto Vowinkel\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/ottovowinkel.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003e(https:\/\/ottovowinkel.com\/)\u003c\/a\u003e, who worked with him regularly:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Alex’s ideal guitar has a flexible tone, great projection, and quick response. He visited to showcase his guitars to our professors, Gunnar Lif and Ove Walter. The moment I played one of his guitars, I knew I had to own one. One year later, in 1987, he delivered my Alejandro Classical India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA few years later, while I was living in Stockholm, Alex reached out with an unusual request—he wanted to borrow my guitar! He claimed he had done something different when building it, which made it sound exceptional… but he couldn’t remember what it was!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlex kept my guitar for precisely nine days and five hours. When he returned it, he thanked me sincerely, and we shared a bottle of red wine (his favorite), talking for hours in my small one-bedroom apartment. He never revealed what he had discovered about my guitar, but that night remains a cherished memory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Spirit of Alex van der Horst\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlex had a\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ebold, passionate, and eccentric personality\u003c\/strong\u003e. With\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewild dark curls\u003c\/strong\u003e, a\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eheavy Dutch accent\u003c\/strong\u003e, and\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eboisterous laughter\u003c\/strong\u003e, he was truly one of a kind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe used to say:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“The classical and flamenco guitar has no amplification. I need to build a guitar that projects in any room while maintaining balance, sweetness, and warmth.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThough he wasn’t a concertmaster,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ehis playing reflected his warm and charismatic spirit\u003c\/strong\u003e.
